Chopard’s iconic Happy Sport collection is celebrating its 25th birthday in 2018. Since its inception, the rule-breaking ladies’ sports watch has taken on unstoppable momentum. Now in its 25th year, the Happy Sport has appeared in numerous iterations. The Chopard classic combines watch and jewellery-making traditions of the Swiss manufacturer. The Happy Sport has become the first ladies’ collectible wristwatch. Here we present four models available from the current catalogue.
25 years of Happy Sport
The story of the Happy Sport goes back to 1976, when Chopard introduced the Happy Diamonds line. A square-shaped men’s wristwatch with a group of diamonds allowed to float freely around the dial. The original idea was the brainchild of in-house designer, Ronald Kurowski. It presented a technical challenge – how to prevent the diamonds from leaving scratch marks? He wrapped each stone in a delicate gold film and placed them between two sapphire crystals. The avant-garde design quickly won acclaim. The concept would become the brand’s signature, both in its wristwatches and jewellery. (At the time the family Maison was under the leadership of husband and wife Karl and Karin Scheufele.)
In 1993, Caroline Scheufele (daughter of Karl and Karin) produced another original classic. She imagined a sports watch based on an improbable blend of materials. Her idea was to combine the floating diamonds with a stainless steel case. Up until then, marrying the two was considered unthinkable. It was a first in the history of jewellery-making. The sporty metal removed the formalness of the diamonds, without losing their mystique. The result was a wristwatch wearable for all modes of modern life. Paired with jeans, trainers, stilettos or a suit. The Happy Sport brought diamonds tastefully into everyday wear. Over the years, the Happy Sport has constantly reinvented itself to keep pace with changing trends.
Chopard Happy Sport 36mm Silver Guilloche Floating Diamond Dial Ladies Watch
With a silvered dial, this first option has an understated appeal focused on the magic ingredient, stainless steel. The case is a three-part affair. It’s comprised of a polished bezel in the fore and transparent case back at the rear. Sandwiched between the two is the distinctive middle case. The seamless form elongates to form the striking lugs. Seven floating diamonds glide above the dial. A single blue-coloured gem is set within the crown (reflecting the classic tradition).
Several features of the dial are common to the selection being presented. Oversized Roman numerals occupy the 3-6-9-12 positions, interspersed by bar indexes. They sit in a middle ring boarded by a minute chapter in black. Located unobtrusively between 4 and 5 o’clock, a date aperture remains discreet until required. At the centre, the dial is ornamented with a subtle guilloché pattern. The wristwatch comes on a glossy black alligator leather strap with steel pin buckle. (Water resistance: 30m/ 3 bar/ 100ft)

Chopard Happy Sport 36mm Blue Floating Diamond Dial Ladies Watch
Clever use of contrast makes this piece a real head-turner. Silver with black accents is traded out for deep blue, highlighted with white. The rich colour accentuates the steel casing. The Roman numerals and rhodium-plated hands stand out for maximum legibility. The central guilloché theme continues.
The signature moving diamonds add an extra dimension. The blue-coloured crown gem matches with the dial. The look is completed by a glossy blue alligator leather strap, employing a stainless steel pin buckle. The automatic mechanical movement is visible through a rear sapphire crystal. (Water resistance: 30m/ 3 bar/ 100ft)

Chopard Happy Sport 36mm Two-Tone White Mother of Pearl Diamond Dial Watch
18ct rose gold combined with steel provides a warmer look. This is accentuated by the stunning mother-of-pearl guilloché dial. Bezel, hands, numerals and indexes, floating diamond wrappings, crown and lug pins are all in rose gold on this well balanced two-tone piece.
The blue-coloured gem studding the crown makes for a playful break in the aesthetic. And the automatic mechanical movement can be seen through a rear sapphire crystal. Paired with a glossy black alligator leather strap with steel pin buckle. (Water resistance: 30m/ 3 bar/ 100ft)

A smaller version of the first option, this last Happy Sport is for women who prefer the petite timepiece. The mini-Happy Sport features five floating diamonds for endless play. And the automatic mechanical movement is again exposed for viewing. Paired with a glossy black alligator leather strap with steel pin buckle. (Water resistance: 30m/ 3 bar/ 100ft)
