TAG Heuer honours its heritage this year by looking to its past to create something for the future – Baselworld 2018 saw a new iteration of the Carrera Calibre 16 and the introduction of a new version of the Aquaracer, made especially for women, boasting an automatic mechanical movement and some serious good looks. Read on to learn more about these exciting new models and to find out how you can get your hands on one.
Carrera Calibre 16

The legendary sports wristwatch Carrera was the brainchild of Jack Heuer. The first of his major contributions to watchmaking, the Carrera was developed in 1963 and focused on optimal readability. Before it became famous, the Carrera was the chronograph of choice for racing car drivers due to its functional dial. It went on to become one of the most iconic wristwatches in history.
While the original Carrera had a classic 3-6-9 sub-dial layout, the Calibre 16 (used to successfully relaunch the Carrera in 2005) is based on the popular Valjoux 7750 movement, hence the now familiar 6-9-12 arrangement. Around this configuration TAG Heuer has built a very sporty model that echos the first chronograph specifically developed for the time measurement of car racing. The slightly sunken sub-dials – the design of which were central to Jack Heuer’s concept – are in white with black font, and stand out nicely against the dark dial colour ensuring high legibility. The chronograph functions are clearly distinguished by red hands (complimented nicely by the red ring around the chronograph pusher at 2 o’clock).

A 60 seconds scale encircles the dial, and a tachymeter is of course present on the ceramic bezel. Both stamp this chronograph with genuine motor racing DNA. The date window and signature labelling appear at 3 o’clock. The time hands and hour markers receive an aged (tan) luminous treatment for that vintage touch. Offered in a 41mm steel case with easy-to-use prominent pushers and grippy crown, the Carrera Calibre 16 comes in your choice of black or blue – with the former paired with a black perforated leather strap with red stitching, and the latter with a steel bracelet. The time-tested Calibre 16 is an automatic chronograph that will give you 42 hours of reserve power.

The dial, which comes in both mother-of-pearl and black options, features new distinctive horizontal striping, magnified date window and arrow on the seconds hand. Hands and indexes are filled with Super LumiNova® for optimal deep-water reading visibility. Ladies can also opt for an inlay of 11 diamond indexes of 1.4mm (0.11 ct.).
