We’re only 4 months in but it’s already shaping up to be a banner year for Swiss watch manufacturer, Breitling. With new CEO, Georges Kern, in the top job less than a year, the company has wasted no time introducing a completely new collection and updating several others. Read on for everything you need to know about the new-look Breitling, including how you can get your hands on your very own customised watch.
A Whole New Ball Game
Last year, it was officially announced that CVC Capital Partners, a UK-based investor, had obtained a majority stake in Breitling, one of the last great independent Swiss watch manufacturers. A few months later, news broke that watch industry veteran, Georges Kern, then Head of Watchmaking, Marketing and Digital at the Richemont Group, would be joining the company as CEO.
His remit was broad, affecting all aspects of the company, including the business structure, logo design, market focus, and pricing tiers. Under his leadership, the Breitling product lines have been consolidated into five ‘umbrella’ families: Navitimer for all pilot’s wristwatches, Superocean for all diver’s wristwatches, Transocean linked to land, Chronomat for all-purpose, more robust models, and Professional, for special, performance-based watches.
Following this new strategy, Breitling has introduced a number of new models within the Navitimer, Superocean and Chronomat collections at Baselworld this year, all of which are available for pre-order from Berry’s now. Below is a quick summary of each new collection, however, with so much to choose from we definitely encourage you to browse the full collection of new Breitling watches now to find your favourite.
The Navitimer collection was the big story for Breitling this year. In total, 32 new watches have joined the line-up, including the brand new and very exciting Navitimer 8 family, which was inspired by the “Breitling Huit Aviation Department”, ‘huit’ being German for eight. This special department was founded in 1938 by Willy Breitling to provide on-board clocks and other dashboard instruments to military and civil aircraft.
The debut collection comprises 6 different models, including two chronographs (one with in-house movement), a world-timer, two time and date models and an oversized pilot’s watch, the design of which was inspired by a stopwatch that Second World War bomber pilots wore strapped to their thighs. Initial feedback has been very positive and so expect this new collection to be a huge success for Breitling, with all models in high-demand.
Breitling has also made a number of notable additions to the newly renamed but ever popular Navitimer 1 collection. An all-time favorite among pilots and aeronautical enthusiasts since 1952, the Navitimer 1 is famed for its unique combination of a chronograph function with a special bezel that functions as a slide rule. Available in four different case sizes, 46mm, 43mm, 41mm and 38mm, the two larger models are equipped with Breitling’s B01 in-house chronograph movement. In a bold move, the Navitimer is also being offered, for the first time ever, without a chronograph (38mm version only – pictured below).
The big news for the Breitling SuperOcean collection is the addition of a new 44mm case size for the Superocean Héritage II, available both as a chronograph or a more refined automatic three-hander with date. Nine different variations are available, offering plenty of choice when it comes to dial colour, case metal and strap type. All models are equipped with Manufacture movements, with the chronograph powered by Breitling’s legendary B01 calibre and the time and date models equipped with the B20 in-house calibre. There’s also a slightly smaller, 42mm version of the automatic three-hander in steel and red gold, if you’re so inclined.
Rounding out the new additions are six new models in the Chronomat collection, including two 44mm chronographs, both equipped with the B01 Manufacture movement and both rated water resistant to an impressive 500m. Completing the collection are a further four new Chronomat Colt automatic time and date watches, available in either 44mm or 41mm diameter case sizes. All four models are water resistant to 200m and pair robust design with understated good looks.
